Celestia is a free space exploration simulation program. The advantage of Celestia over other satellite imagery programs is that in addition to seeing the Earth’s surface, you can zoom in on moons, stars, and planets. The user controls what they see. The user guides for Celestia are very thorough and available in four languages.

Concept Demonstration: Global Climate Data

Geo.me Solutions has created a fairly in-depth mapped display of global climate data. The map  is a Google Map containing placemarks that when opened reveal current weather data as well as historical weather data. In some cases there is data dating back three hundred years. The data is recorded from more than 1,500 weather stations around the globe. You can browse through the data sets by clicking on placemarks on the map or you can enter a search for a specific location.

Wunder Rotunda Learning Adventures

The Wonder Rotunda is designed to open the eyes of youngsters to the wonders of our world, much the way world’s fairs and expos did for prior generations. Fifteen learning adventures in a theme park setting get kids thinking about our world, finding things that they’re passionate about, and exploring how they might make their mark some day.

Set on an island in New York Harbor, the Wonder Rotunda’s interactive, animated adventures cover topics as diverse as tropical rainforests, African wildlife, marine life, the human body’s digestive system, money and business, American government, nutrition, globalization, film making, classical music, performing and visual arts, space exploration and, making a difference in the world. The learning adventures move briskly and with excitement, while affording youngsters the option of probing more deeply where they have the interest.

Sort and Analyze DNA Yourself!

This fun online simulator interactively takes you through the process of sorting DNA through Gel Electrophoresis with a few clicks of a mouse. It’s the thrill of a lab experiment without the mess!

Periodic Table Tetris

This fun game uses the style of the classic video game Tetris to help students memorize the periodic table of elements. To play the game, students use their keyboard’s arrow keys to move element blocks into the proper place. The game has three levels for students to progress through.

Calculate your Carbon Footprint

Inevitably, in going about our daily lives – commuting, sheltering our families, eating – each of us contributes to the greenhouse gas emissions that are causing climate change. Yet, there are many things each of us, as individuals, can do to reduce our carbon emissions. The choices we make in our homes, our travel, the food we eat, and what we buy and throw away all influence our carbon footprint and can help ensure a stable climate for future generations.

Use The Nature Conservancy’s carbon footprint calculator to measure your impact on our climate. Our carbon footprint calculator estimates how many tons of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases your choices create each year.

The Mechanical Universe and Beyond

This series helps teachers demystify physics by showing students what it looks like. Field trips to hot-air balloon events, symphony concerts, bicycle shops, and other locales make complex concepts more accessible. Inventive computer graphics illustrate abstract concepts such as time, force, and capacitance, while historical reenactments of the studies of Newton, Leibniz, Maxwell, and others trace the evolution of theories. The Mechanical Universe helps meet different students’ needs, from the basic requirements of liberal arts students to the rigorous demands of science and engineering majors. This series is also valuable for teacher professional development.

The MSP component of Project GPS2 is meant for dedicated students who wish to participate in additional mentoring and activities to advance themselves within their field. Participation in these supplementary activities is designed to help you reach your academic and professional goals and to use multiple Project and faculty resources to make sure that you are able to take advantage of any potential benefits that you are eligible to receive.

Our primary goals for students who enroll in the MSP component of the Project are:
- research and/or field experience,
- exposure to other STEM disciplines (ex: go on whale watching trips or geology hikes regardless of your major),
- ensure students are linked to existing campus resources,
- development of a network of professional contacts,
- construction of a good resume and statement of purpose,
- understanding of career options and possible paths based on academic interests,
- becoming more comfortable interacting with Fullerton College faculty.

In addition to the benefits of being part of Project GPS2, MSP students will also receive:
- one on one attention with a faculty mentor and counselor to help them get the most out of their experience at FC,
- free field trips and excursions,
- opportunities to have a volunteer internships paid,
- additional opportunities to meet and connect with other STEM students who share your interests and abilities as well as potential employers/contacts
- specific help creating a professional resume and finding scholarships and possible internships,
- specific MSP scholarships for a) most improved GPA, and b) most participation in MSP activities and related events (this will be based on points accrued throughout the year).
- the ability to apply for small need-based grants that can help you attend specific events related to your academic and career path (EX: maybe $100 towards registration and transportation costs to attend a medical conference that is held out of town).

As part of the MSP program, all enrolled students will be required to:
- meet with the MSP Coordinator/Student Advisor at least once a semester,
- have regular contact with their faculty mentors,
- enroll in at least one STEM course per semester,
- participate in at least two GPS2 sponsored activities or workshops per semester (ideally at least one at a different campus),
- fill out a biannual tracking questionnaire to help us track your progress,
- give us permission to access your academic records and contact your instructors during the semester.

Fullerton College Elevate

Elevate is part of Project GPS2 and is targeting campus athletes to introduce and stimulate Math, Science, Technology and Engineering majors and careers.The program components include: * events that create meaningful connections with athletics and STEM * events that create meaningful connections with Stem majors and careers * career assessment * tutoring in STEM Subjects * cohorting athletes into courses that include STEM sponsored Supplemental Instruction * internships * connecting future teachers with science and math teaching opportunities * service learning experiences in the STEM areas * learning community courses * contact and visits with 4 year universities that provide additional education in the STEM fields Math Boot Camp: Raise Your Game Eighteen Fullerton College Athletes attended a pilot Success in Math Boot Camp on campus from August 10 – 13. Designed and instructed by two Fullerton College Math Instructors, Paul Farnham and Nick Huerta, it included study and test strategies and specifics related to course content for Math 20 and Math 40.

Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation
